DocuSign CLM - Switch to New Merge Engine in Document Generation

Attribute Group - Per Template

It is possible to select a different engine for a single template by putting a specific attribute on the template document in DocuSign CLM. In the account, create an attribute group named "SpringCM Merge Engine" containing fields named "Use Current" and "Use Legacy" and placing the group on the template document in DocuSign CLM. A value of "true" for "Use Current" will result in using the Document Assembler merge engine for all merges with the template regardless of the account default. A value of "true" for "Use Legacy" will result in using the legacy (aka XML Merge) merge engine for all merges with the template regardless of the account default unless the "Use Current" field is set to "true" as well in which case Document Assembler will win.

If your DocuSign CLM account is using content controls for your Doc Launcher configs and you wish to start using the new inline tags for Doc Launcher, you will have to switch your DocuSign CLM account from the old merge engine to the new one. You will first have to contact support to ask for the merge engine in your account to be switched to the new engine.

You will then have to create and apply a new attribute group to all of your Doc Launcher templates so that the old templates with content controls will work with the new engine. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Go to Admin -> Attributes and click Create Group.
  2. Name the new attribute group SpringCM Merge Engine.
    1. Click ADD FIELD.
    2. Name the field Use Current.
    3. For the field type, click the up/down arrows and select Drop Down.
    4. A text box will pop out. Type True on the first line, and type False on the next line.
  3. Click ADD FIELD.
    1. Name the field Use Legacy.
    2. For the field type, click the up/down arrows and select Drop Down.
    3. A text box will pop out. Type True on the first line, and type False on the next line.
    4. Click Save.
  4. Now find the folder in DocuSign CLM that contains your Doc Launcher merge templates. Open each Word template in DocuSign CLM and perform the following steps on each document.
    1. Check the box to the left of the template and select Manage -> Attributes
    2. Click ADD GROUP and select SpringCM Merge Engine from the drop-down
    3. Click ADD FIELD and select Use Current.
      1. Click ADD FIELD and select Use Legacy
      2. Click Save
    4. Return to the document. For templates that are going to be used with the old XML merge engine, with content control tags, drop the Use Current to False and Use Legacy to True.
    5. For templates that are going to be used with the new XML merge engine, with inline tags, drop the Use Current to True and Use Legacy to False.
    6. Click Save.

Repeat the attribute application process for every template. Your account can now use the new merge engine for inline tagging, and your old templates with content controls will still work.
